Global Black Economic Forum Amplifies Black Women’s Health at ESSENCE Festival of Culture 2026

Conversations that change communities often begin with courageous voices willing to speak openly. During the ESSENCE Festival of Culture 2026, the Global Black Economic Forum (GBEF) created exactly that kind of space by hosting a powerful discussion centered on Black women’s health, advocacy, and empowerment. The panel was part of GBEF’s broader programming at the festival, which brings together leaders across health, business, culture, and economic justice to address issues impacting Black communities.

Titled “Sistas, Say It Louder: Reclaiming Power, Pleasure, and Protection in Black Women’s Health,” the conversation featured an accomplished panel that included GRAMMY-nominated singer and television personality Tamar Braxton, actress, author, and advocate Amiyah Scott, LaDeia Joyce, and faith leader Dr. Karri Bryant. The discussion was moderated by Dr. Toyin Nwafor, whose thoughtful leadership guided an honest and impactful exchange.

Opening remarks were delivered by Rashad Burgess, Vice President of Corporate Responsibility at Gilead Sciences, who emphasized the importance of advancing equitable healthcare and creating spaces where honest, community-centered dialogue can flourish. Sponsored by Gilead Sciences, the panel examined the intersections of health, relationships, self-worth, and advocacy while encouraging attendees to confront topics that have too often been met with silence and stigma.

Rather than avoiding difficult conversations, the panelists challenged attendees to become active advocates for their own well-being. Through personal stories, lived experiences, and professional expertise, the speakers emphasized the importance of open conversations surrounding sexual health, informed healthcare decisions, and removing the barriers that continue to affect healthcare access and outcomes for Black women.

The discussion also reflected the Global Black Economic Forum’s ongoing commitment to advancing equity beyond the festival stage. Through year-round initiatives focused on health, economic empowerment, workforce development, and policy, GBEF continues to create opportunities that strengthen Black communities while elevating conversations that inspire lasting change.

As one of the most anticipated gatherings during the ESSENCE Festival of Culture, the panel served as a reminder that meaningful progress begins when communities are empowered with knowledge, encouraged to share their stories, and supported by leaders committed to equity and wellness.

At a time when conversations around Black women’s health are more important than ever, the Global Black Economic Forum demonstrated that creating safe spaces for truth, healing, and advocacy is not only necessary—it’s transformative.
